What I find interesting is the connection with more archaic buried tomb-treasures, specifically the Egyptian concept of preparing for a journey into an afterlife by preserving and provisioning the crypt with the goods of this world. This arctic seed repository has similar, yet scientifically motivated purpose... to provide the means for resurrection after a 'world death'.
