What I find interesting is the connection with more archaic buried tomb-treasures, specifically the Egyptian concept of preparing for a journey into an afterlife by preserving and provisioning the crypt with the goods of this world. This arctic seed repository has similar, yet scientifically motivated purpose... to provide the means for resurrection after a 'world death'.

Fascinating taking/saving seeds for the next world, reminds me of an old film, a garden in a spaceship, and I think the two men who tended it argued or died, all that was left was these two little robots bustling around looking after the plants - the last remains of Earth.
Or, on a more happier note, the Beaker people, who always took a cup with them to the afterworld, and probably a leg of pork as well.

Now filled the hallowed cup of clay
Withdrew from Cromlech's summit grey
Last night procured in locks of wool,
Filled it with care and filled it full,
Such beverage suits etherial sprite
Ere it ascends to realms of light.
Place it contiguous to the head

We do have a similar "store" in the UK but mainly for varieties of fruit/veg that are no longer fashionable with growers .
