The New Labour government has systematically dismantled the wildlife protection and conservation structures since it's been in government. The guys that look after obscure patches of earth and strange species are not effective campaigners, I guess. I never thought it possible that I would be able to praise the Conservative Party but their laws and financial support had put British wildlife research in front of the world - now it's a shambles worthy of an eastern European country. I wouldn't blame any particular party, just the pesky taxpayers who always vote for lower taxes. The Defra schemes, that pay farmers to look after flora and fauna, are pretty good but the money all comes from Europe not us. If that dried up it would be sod the ground nesting birds in no time.
