Ruddle - there's a transient character in a Thomas Hardy novel that has a ruddle seller. He roves, with his wagon, selling to farmers who use it - still - for marking sheep.

Diggory Venn in "Return of the native " is the reddle man , Hardy is not at all popular these days but I'm still a big fan . Pity he wasn't as interested in archaeology as another great writer of "peasant" novels ,Leslie Mitchell aka Lewis Grassic Gibbon , he had so much more surrounding him than just Stonehenge.
