Oh!.......I forgot..............As well as glue size, my dad used to mix a "Dolly Blue" in with his whitewash.

Dazzling is the only word to describe it.

There used to be a few different colours of donkey stone, and women had there own way of using them. Some used to do just the sides of the steps , or the window sills.

I think they're still made around north Lancashire.

I think the stone for whitening the edge of steps was pumice - I know where there is a piece and will look at it 'sometime'. Dolly Blue was made in a mill near where I lived - my dad never tired of showing us it as we went by on the bus - but now it is integrated into soap powder as 'miracle blue whitener' or similar.
