Well just type gnomon/Silbury Hill, and you come up with H.G.Wells and The Secrets of the Heart..... I expect with egyptology at that time seeing Silbury as a gnomon was fashionable. As for the four feet would that be something to do with the sun overhead and post?

He doesn't mention a post but I think you're right about the Egyptology thing.
Mind you, some of his observations are wrong...he describes an area at the delightfully named Bradenstoke cum Clack, to the W of Lynham as "a well preserved camp of rather curious triangular construction with a tumulus at its centre".
