Well it depends what you mean by "work". If the pendulum on the stick doesn't move you might say the experiment has "worked".

And anyway, there are lots ofexperiments you could do if you approach the thing purely in a spirit of enquiry. What if you had a pendulum in each hand, would they work in concert? Or hanging off your toe? Or nose? Or....
