I thought there was evidence of smoking in China thousands of years ago but I can't remember the source.

My story is that hemp seeds were thrown onto hot stones inside a sweat lodge. People were smoking pipes in Raleigh's time, but honeysuckle and hemp - maybe nettles too - he just brought them a new mixture. It would be curious to know what went into the ancient beakers though - my favourite guess would be mead or metheglin.

China's the first place we have descriptions of it, that's right: from 2737 BC (give or take a few years!). Can't remember the exact source misself but can dig it out if it's of primary importance.
