If the salt hills you refer to are the salt domes of the southern North Sea, they were deposited during the Permian period 290-250 million years ago when the area was covered with a shallow sea known as the Zechstein sea.
These salt domes are very well known and have been intensively mapped. The formations trap natural gas hence the large gas fields of the southern North Sea
