Wasn't it an eighteenth century fashion to plant trees on barrows? I think the landed gentry were the culprets.

Oh dear, I was hoping they'd be a bit more significant than a bit of aristocratic landscape gardening! ;o)
This is what I heard. I think the Xtian Church may have encouraged this practice. It sort of fits in with all the stuff that happened to stone circles as well (telling stories about the Devil turning people to stone, building on top of them, etc).
