confused of cumbria

As far as im aware, they call 'stone circles' cromlechs in Northern Europe.

Cromlech is a Breton word (I think) that means Bent Stone [crom lech - is very similar to the Irish and Welsh (I think) for the same phrase], which is applied to the arcs of stones in the north of France.

There's an old Irish god called Crom Cruach whose name derives from the same root.

Some stone circles have 'dolmens' in them (see Carrowmore for the ultimate examples) and so the terms became mixed up and interchangable by Antiquarians and we've never recovered from it :-(
