i often thought that was odd too, but the cherhill horse isnt a very old one , so its perfectly plausable that the pub might have been there first, i'm sure it wouldnt be hard to find out.

You are quite right the pub was there first, it was a farmhouse a few hundred yards further towards Bath and it appears it burnt down and was then rebuilt on its present site shortly before the White Horse was cut. I say shortly, it was from memory 1769 and the White Horse was cut in 1780.
