I think its more to do with the protocol for submission of the paper rather than an attitude, I think its fair to use Ken Williams with no quote marks but if your submitting a paper with 'one particular person, Slartybartfast from badgersareevil.com, once said..' it might be distracting for the reader to sit and ponder 'who's parents could be so cruel?!'.

My parents called me christopher not chris but ill answer to it if I'm feeling charitable .I hated being called Biko at school,My name is Christopher I wouldnt want to be known as anything else, I dont see myself as a carrier of christ(who ever he was ) but thats my name.I did once toy with the idea of being known as Preston Brockhurst (a village in Shrops) but its just not me.
Nik-names are weird may as well call everyone 'dick head'
