What do others think about this? Are we a valid source for such writing?
Absolutely!
This forum is a resource as valuable as the old 'Notes & Queries' are to us now.

I think what we put here is very important, at the end of the day what qualifications did the original antiquarians have?
I suspect some of the sites that I have visited have probably never been photographed before and therefore who knows how important these pics could be in 50 years time. I think this is especially true in ireland where figures have been quoted as that we are losing 10% of archeaological sites every 10 years. (I can't remember where I got that figure though!)

possibly not quite what were after but ...
Whilst at swinside on the winter solstice last year I was joined by two other blokes, one was local and the other had come from leeds, the leeds guy then asked us both if we'd ever heard of the modern antiquarian , the local hadn't but I said yes I had, leeds then went on to highly sing this places praises saying it had just about everything you ever needed to know and was how he chose where to go for a day out, as do hundreds if not thousands more I suspect.
Soooo i would say this place is a serious source academic and everyone.
