I was on holiday last week in the lake District, and found this piece of stone whilst walking along the shore of Derwentwater near Keswick.
It measures about 5cm x 3cm. Curiously, it fits very comfortably in the hand, as there seems to be a place to put the thumb on one side, and for the index finger on the other, with small ridges. It seems to be a piece of Grey slate, but i'm not 'up' on this subject, so can't say exactly what it's made of.
I'm aware the shape could just be coincidence and nothing more, but I wondered if anyone could tell me if this might be a miniature axe head or Hand axe?

Cheers,
Simon

its a miniture axe head.

It does look like it's got worn edges from use, not normal weathering or being in a river. That strange bifurcation on the one side... that's unusual.

Hope it turns out to be the real thing!

EDIT: It looks as if you could notch a stick or a bone into that groove on one side and sinew the thing together into a hammer.
