..To park in the car park at Avebury!?
Have just seen this in the local paper for local people.it's not on the interweb version so i can't post it up.Sorry!

Goodness, that's ridiculous. Will that include the little car park that one seems to be able to get away with parking in if it's not too busy?

Which paper Notd?

Sounds like the Red Lion car park (there's a ticket machine there now - or was until quite recently). It's not as bad as it sounds - the fiver is reimbursed if you spend more than five quid in the Lion - which is not very difficult to do even on an off day.

Sounds like a nice easy way for NT to rake in a few quid on one of "their" most popular sites that doesn't have an entrance fee - yet! Sad, really...

I take it the locals can park for free, which is obviously how it should be.
So for your fiver you get to drive into a world class monument, park your car and are then free to walk around the monument unhindered. That doesn't seem too outrageous to me. Whats a fiver? a packet of fags, a couple of drinks in the Red Lion. If there's four of you in the car then that's only one pound and twenty five new pence each.
I would hope that there's a decent bus service to the village and that this charge may persuade more folk to use it. I drive a car meself so I'm not gonna start preaching but there are really are too many cars on the road and Avebury is only a small village.

I guess I'd better put me tin hat on.....

I went to Avebury today to walk up to Fyfield Down with Rex (another story). I went to park in the carpark on the main road but the attendant advised me he would be closing the gate early that day. Because I would probably not be back in time I decided to park in the Red Lion carpark instead. I payed 2 pounds for four hours which I though was reasonable.
The problem I have is that if I want to go for a bit of a hike from Avebury I need to make sure I get back in time before they lock the gate or the ticket runs out. This always makes me feel a bit rushed. For a fiver I would want to be able to park as long as I liked.
Avebury is my fave place in all the world, I remember going there when I was little and the grass was left to grow long also when I was studying and squotting for exams (I used to cycle from Chippenham in those days) and always now when I need to sit and ponder things. I visit avebury at least 10 times a year (thats a lot of pondering) and a fiver then start to become a fair amount of money for us (sort of) locals.
I plan to outwit the charges though because I have told my sons to spread my ashes around the place when I die and I can be there foreever without paying a penny ;o)
