Don't be so silly. The rock is a soft sandstone - full of bits of quartz - such as was preferred for carving when it was available. Bolton is surrounded by Millstone Grit geology - it's often suggested as being beneath the Boltonian character - and this is what the quern, found at Affetside, was made from.
