That particular incident has been quoted with relish for some time by detectorists on the "they'm as bad as us M8" principle. But it always struck me that "I died" was a reasonable excuse for an archaeologist losing a few artefacts whereas "'cuz they'm mine" was a poor one for thousands of people who have removed without trace tens of millions of them.
