Portugal anyone?

We're in the process of booking a five-day holiday in Portugal and I'll have an allowance of one, or two if I'm very lucky, days find some of the sites in TME. We'll be based in Lisbon but will hire a car. The map in TME doesn't show any large towns so I'm having trouble finding the specific areas on larger maps of Portugal, and how far they are from Lisbon in driving hours.

Has anyone 'done' Portugal and if so, any words of wisdom? Is it a realistic possibility to visit a number of sites in a day trip from Lisbon (not too fussy about leaving early and getting back late)?

Its a toss-up between going here or to Malta, some fantastic stuff in Malta too so if there's no possibility of doing a day trip in Portugal I'll sway to Malta instead :)

Hi Ken
Evora and it's megalithic wonders are about 120kms east of Lisbon.
The portal has a shedload of Portugese sites and associated multimap references.
Why not give Carlos, who posts on Unsung and the pump, a shout-out. He lives in Portugal and perhaps can give you some idea of the geography of the place and do-able distances.

I lived in malta for 6 months, plenty to go and see, dont forget the 'dolmen hotel'...one big overpriced hotel complex built AROUND a 'tarxien' phase temple.
You need to go to reception to ask permission to go view.

Mind the timeshare touts wont you!

This is one of the better sites on Portugese monuments. Shame there's no maps (that I've seen yet, anyway)

Thanks for all the replies, we've booked the flights, hotel etc. and I'm now in the process of mapping out a funny shaped squiggle that will be our route around as many sites in TME as we can fit in one day, probably will be the ones west of Evora. Really looking forward to it, those dolmens really float the oul boat, and the cromleques (or whatever way they spell 'em!), wow!

Thanks for all the input from Carlos especially, I may be picking your brain for a few more details over the coming weeks, we're going to be in Lisbon from the 16th to 21st I think so must try and meet for a beer, or emergency accomodation if herself kicks me out for lingering too long at some site or other :)
