I'll throw my hat into the "splash pages suck" side as well. Not to be negative, just I think it's the best advice you'll get regarding this.

Ditto the above. Gateway pages suck. They put me off visiting a site, and if I really want to use the site regularly, I'll but bookmark a page behind the index.
