I would say that Flash is is your only real option. You could do some funky dynamic HTML, but that can be a bit tricky between browsers.

My totally pointless contribution is:

Why? I personally hate websites with the 'click here to enter' button - didn't I already to that by clicking on your url? (I may be alone in this)

Also, I've read that Google doesn't like them either & it can affect your ranking if that kind of thing bothers you.

I'll get me opinionated coat...

If you were to forfeit the fading between shots, there is a relatively solid JavaScript solution to this, which has the advantage of not requiring a plug-in.

Otherwise, I concur with Fourwinds.
