Hello. My name is Kelly Burke and I live in the United States. My Great Great Grandfather immigrated to the US in the mid to late 1800s. We have no record of his birthplace. Recently a copy of of his son's, my Great Grandfather's, birth certificate surfaced, dated Dec 9 1885. It shows the location of my Great Great Grandfather's birth. It is difficult to read, but looks like Bowledgebrigge. I've searched the Web, but this spelling gets no results. When I typed it in without the brigge on the end, it brought me to this site and the following header: Heatherwood Hospital Barrow, Round Barrow(s) Alternative name/spelling: Bowledge Hill.

Is there a town or county that has this name, or a similar name? Are there ways of checking birth records once the town in identified? Does anyone have another information that could help me find the birthplace of my Great Great Grandfather, Valentine Burke? Thanks for anything you can do.

One big advantage is that Valentine Burke is not too common a name . A search of the relevant census shouldn't be too difficult ,I think you can do it online for most of the UK for a small cost . The census years were 1841 (possibly 1831 for England ) and every ten years after that . Hope that is of some help .

Try http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census/ and http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/.
good luck!

I'm a sucker for family history, so I had a quick look. Am I right in thinking Valentine was born in New York? as I found a trace of a Valentine Burke born there in 1885. If not, where? And can you tell me his father's name at least?

Not that I'm encouraging off topic conversation of course. It won't happen again.
