I don't see how rock carvings can seriously effect the qualities of a stone when you wack it with something. Rock carving is an aesthetic thing, and possibly a tactile thing, but that's as far as I'd go with it.

I am a bit pissed though, so I may be talking rubbish.

If you put 'ringing' into the search box there are three 'ringing stones' on tma. Though I expect there are more in the real world. Dunno about ringing (with a clear note) but the repetitive banging of stone on stone to carve the thing would either give you a headache or maybe it'd make you go all trancey with its repetitiveness. Anyway guess it partly depends on the geology?
