I know in the case of Clachan an Diridh the site was tree-free when it was built, but is now in a clearing in a wood. It may be that the area around sites was kept clear of trees when they were still in use

I thought of that myself, I know of one site where this slighty eccentric guy I know told me he reckons that the soil is different in areas that they wanted the view to remain intact, anyone ever hear of anything like this before?
