I know a few of ye have your own webpages. Ive been researching my family tree on the side and I wanted to put it up on the interweb. I also wanted to link my profile here to the page and maybe have a small bit of blurb attached.
So im guessing we are talking about two pages, one for my family tree the other for a megalithic link. Anyone got any recommendations on user friendly sites.
Id prefer if I could call the site www.bawn.ie or something like that.

Cheers

Theres a few good weblog type sites that you can customise a lot, dont have any names though but I'm sure someone will.

If you want a .ie you have to have documentation that you have a claim to that name, a business or legal entity. Its a real pain, with novara.ie they let you pay for a .ie (89 euros) and afterwards tell you to send all these documents. A .com is much cheaper and easier.

If you want your own domain (e.g. www.bawn.ie) then you'll have to buy it in the first place and pay a hosting company for the privilege of some web space.

Under this model you'd probably create a web site from scratch, using a protocol called FTP to get your web pages from your PC to the web space. The web pages could be crafted in a text editor (a bit technically involved) or created using a software package such as Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver.

Having said that, one of the host companies I've used quite a bit has some sort of built in tool so that you can create your web pages on-line. I've never used it, but I guess it might be what you're looking for. This is them:

https://www.one.com/

This company is also OK:

https://www.1and1.co.uk/

There are also some web sites that are specifically for genealogists to post their family trees on, but you probably know about that sort of thing already.

Have you looked at Genes Reunited and Ancestry.com?

It's really easy: Middle of August, I had no sites & no clue:

I now have 1 megalithic site and 1 (crap) blog as you can see on my profile.

For webspace, I use http://www.awardspace.com/ who have a quite good free plan as well as paid. They will host one top level domain (bawn.ie) for free, but you will need to buy it first. I bought mine last night from http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ £6 for 2years for a .co.uk.

To get your website up & running, get some quite stunning free templates from here: http://www.openwebdesign.org/ and edit them with a free WYSIWYG editor such as http://www.nvu.com/index.php

For FTP (getting your files from your pc to the web) I can't recommend http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/ enough.

It really is quite simple-If you want more, mail me & I'll run you through what I did step by step, 'tho to be quite honest, I learnt all I know (such as it is) from googling any questions that came up.

Good luck, and post your site on here when you're done!
