Hut Circles

Many thanks - I'll have a poke around when I get down there. It piqued my interest because I'd never seen hut circles marked before and there was dozens highlghted all over Dartmoor. It's a fascinating map - no A roads or motorways, loads of camps wells and circles that aren't marked anymore, Plymouth looked tiny compared to what's on the O/S today. Sad really.

Hi JS

Having been up at Merrivale last Monday I can reccomend it as a good starting point. Easily accessible from the road and easy to see, check my most recent postings in the Dartmmor section. There is also a large settlement near Yellowmead stone circle, although many of the stones have been dislodged and some huts are hard to make out amongst the general litter of stones.

At Trewortha Farm on Bodmin Moor they have recreated three of four huts from the Bronze Age. If you are lucky the owners will let you have a look around.

The only problem I have found with the old maps is that sometimes remains were identified wrong, cairns turn out to be huts and vice versa. At merrivale there is a stone circle/cairn/hut depending on which book or map you look at.

Good luck with your hunting

Mr H
