That sounds really interesting! I've been told I should use special Japanese paper for hand-printing some art I've been doing - precisely because it has long fibres which don't mind being poked into indentations, so the paper won't rip. I doubt there's any concern about 'acid' if you used such paper - acid free paper would be what you'd want for putting artwork on.

Yes, thought that might be the case. Can put your mind at rest though concerning Japanese paper - this is widely used in both Western and Eastern conservation labs. The tamping technique is not as damaging as rubbing (it really is a very gentle technique) but I guess if you have hundreds of people doing it the effect in the long run is the same.
