Two mindless examples in WKLB..

The trouble is that they are scratched not chalked. Experimented with a bit of flint and one of the (modern) marker stones outside and got the same result.
A bit of spit on a hankie had no effect.

Is it still worthwhile posting examples like this? IMHO it needs to be done if only to show that if others take the same pics in years to come and the graffiti is still there, how long this sort of defacement lasts.
Jim.

That's appalling!

And yes, I think you're right to keep drawing people's attention to this sort of mindless vandalism Mr J. Being on the inside of the barrow, they' going to be visible for a lot longer than if they were on the outside.

Dunno what can be done :-( Signs aren't going to deter these people - CCTV perhaps?

We can see from this pic...http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/post/51587,

that the idiots are so stupid, playing noughts and crosses....they have both played "X", maybe we should leave them a guide to playing the game.

Bloody Idiots...

I don't think you are ever going to stop this type of behaviour.

I read (whilst browsing the Times archive for 1913) that Section 14 of the Ancient Monuments Consolidation and Amendment Act 1913 "provides that any person who injures or defaces any monument of which the Commissioners of Works or a local authority are the owners or guardians, or which is the subject of a Preservation Order.. shall be liable to a fine not exceeding £5, in addition to the cost of repairing the damage, with the alternative of imprisonment, with or without hard labour, for a term not exceeding one month."

What applies these days? There must be something similar - or just this updated with a bigger fine. I hope the hard labour's still in there though.
