I think you're right there. If they could dig huge rock-cut ditches with antler picks, I'm sure they could have done delicate stuff with them, too. You could easily use a hammer-stone instead of a wooden mallet.I'm currently reading bits of The Irish Stone Axe Project, which is an attempt to catalog and catagorise the 20,000+ known Irish stone axes*. These include wedges and chisels. The points on some of the chisels would be a good match for pecking marks.
*The National Museum has 13,500+ of these in storage. There are about 5 on display!!!!
