I collect fossils in a small way and one of my favourites is a piece of fossilized wood ('bout as thick as an adult's wrist) from the Cretaceous; it's beautiful, and looks just like a gnarled old branch except that it's been turned to stone and now very heavy (it even has a slight green hue on one side that looks like moss). The top is polished and looks like marble :-)
