Whenever I try to open it with Google Earth it says it has to shut down. WAAAHHH!!

Any advice? I'm on Windows XP if that helps.

Uninstall Google Earth and re-install the latest version. It should save all your places and what have you.
Then try the kml and sit back for a nice long wait. I zoomed out so I could watch the whole of the uk being covered in megalithic smarties many miles high...

This happened to me when I first started using the .kml file that isn't zipped up.

Make sure that you only use the zipped up version if you're running version 3 (recommended for XP users). If you try and use the un-zipped .kml file with version 3, Google earth will gracefully die.
