It's not unknown for me to stand on stones occasionally. I don't mind others doing it in most circumstances. I do know that I/they shouldn't, and that at very busy sites the minute damage each person does damage soon mounts up. I do feel that people should experience the sites though and haven't yet worked out a true definition of 'experincing' a site.
