Buried mineral gains such as quartz absorb and store energy from natural background radiation. The longer the grain is buried, the more the stored energy. When a buried grain is exposed to light, this energy is released as light; when the grain is reburied, the energy again begins to accumulate. hhhmmmmm......you have made up with Cropedy!!!! Ehmm... not quite :-) Sebastian Payne (author of the above paper) and Cropredy are 'worlds' apart. Mmm... dunno though, perhaps there is a metaphysical link between the two. To quote the oft-quoted -

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

Or to take a more jaded view, "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." ;-)
