Since I've been banging on about Callanish and drooling over the stream of photos on this site for the last few weeks, I've just had a credit card dropped on my lap with orders to 'just book it!' for my birthday weekend, 5-7th August. Can anyone help me out with a travel plan, flying from to Dublin to where? We will probably hire a car but how does that work with ferries etc. to the Islands? Any tips on accomodation? What could we fit in?

I'm a total ignoramus when it comes to the geography of the area!

Hi Ken,
I got a BMI flight from Edinburgh to Lewis for less than 100 quid return and hired a van from Mackinnon Self Drive in Stornoway which worked out a little cheaper than a car.
I camped in the field just beside the Callanish stones at a cost of free.
Don't forget to take some cash for Margaret & Rons tour.

You can pick up cheap flights from Belfast to Glasgow for pennies (literally) then with a connecting flight to Stornoway you could be there in a few hours.

If you are taking a partner, the west coast drive from Glasgow to the ferry terminal in Uig (Skye), is a holiday in itself, as it takes in a lot of the famous scenery such as Loch Lomond, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, Ben Nevis, Skye etc'

But, be warned, CalMac ferry prices can be quite horrendous when taking your car over the water.

If you need any info on the Glasgow/west coast area let me know and I'll be happy to help.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions, looks like Callanish will have to wait until September at the earliest so trying to plan out the Salisbury trip instead. Or maybe my aborted trip to Wales. Gah!
