Tis now blowing a gale up here on Lewis, rain is in the air and it has clouded over....doesn't bode well for those who are planning to try and watch the Lunar Standstill at Callanish tonight. Don't think I'll bother....

Spent all day up there yesterday; it was breezy (kept away the midges) and really sunny, barely a cloud in the sky.....the moon rose spectacularly from the feet of Sleeping Beauty, huge and glowing bright orange, at around midnight.....it then started to rise and a big black cloud started to cross it; at one point in looked like a Hallowe'en pumpkin! Having had perfect weather all day, we were defeated by ominous black clouds from then on. We occasionally saw the orange glow through the clouds but we never saw the moon again and the point when it should have been poitioned between the 2 stones, it had disappeared completely.

So...disappointment after such an amazing day but there was a really great atmosphere (if a few too many hippies playing bongos and maracas for my liking) and I was slightly irked at the need for the local church members to sing Amazing Grace 17 times in a row, whilst handing out pamphlets about how we need to turn to Christ. I'm sure they wouldn't like ancient festivals and beliefs!

Anyway, it was a really great experience, despite the fact that I didn't meet 1 solitary TMAer at all. Is it something I said????

I also managed to get a look at the 2 possible new circles which I mentioned here a few months ago. Having seen the pix I thought they looked pretty plausible but now I've seen them, I'm not so sure. I will post my pix and details

Oh yeah, my weirdest experience of the evening was talking to a woman who had decided to come to Lewis form S Wales to exprience the Standstill after reading about it in ....wait for it...The Daily Mail!!! How bizarre is that?

<I'm sure they wouldn't like ancient festivals and beliefs!>

Sorry, that should read "I'm sure they wouldn't like it if I walked into their church and started handing out books on ancient festivals and beliefs!"

Only had 3 hours sleep so apologies for the slip-up....

Grrrrrr

Sorry to read the weather's not too good up there Vicster - sounds like it can change fairly rapidly though so fingers crossed for tonight.

That's appalling news about the local church members - something similar happened at Avebury last year. I'm going to write to Terry Jones and suggest he does another Barbarians-type programme but centred on Christianity ;-)

Lovely picture you are painting, glad I could'nt afford the journey. 17 times of Amazing Grace did'nt they know any other hymns to convert you heathen lot... and then the moon had to play up and disappear behind a black cloud, still you were next to the stones and must have soaked in some of the atmosphere of Callanish... please go on reporting don't want to read it in the Daily Mail ;)

Is that red dot in the stones another fire?

I'm sure there are people there in anoraks too, you won't have to wear a kaftan. PRobably.

Well, we're back!

And I must say, what a fantastic week we had... Callanish on Sunday was amazing! Taking photos around midnight without the need for a flash was weird..!

What a shame we didn't all arrange to meet up, though. Woulda bin nice to put a few more faces to names! Managed to meet up with Dee and Gerald Ponting (et al) in the Doune Braes Hotel on the Monday, which was excellent - what a nice bunch of people! All absolutely nuts, naturally... ;o)

The moon in all it's glory coming out just after midnight was one of the most extraordinary sights I've seen. Enormous and bright orange... >sigh<

I have to say, we didn't see any bad behaviour (except the inconsiderate sods taking up the upper parking area when the car park by the visitor centre was all but empty! And the people camping so close to the stones could have been a bit more thoughtful with their location) - everyone seemed pretty ecstatic and happy and friendly to me...

Maybe more later.

Vicster - Didn't get the chance to go see your possible sites, unfortunately, but will do next time! We're so sad to be back, so a return visit will probably be sooner than we imagine... ;o)

Happy days!

Well, we seem to have talked ourselves out about our Callanish experiences this year!

I was just wondering - is anyone lucky enough to be going for the 29th September moon skim?

We were seriously considering it, but it's just too much of a frippery if I'm honest to meself...
