I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I remember reading something once about the folks from temperate countries being less prone to taking things easy - no 'manana' culture and siestas during the afternoon. This and the desire to get the fuck out of the rainy lands helped them go out and kick ass (or try to).

I'm not defending or attacking what was said/read, because I, like yourself, can't be sure of the full context.

I think that is a pretty dodgy explanation you are refering to there: to take an obvious example, why were the dudes who built the Egyptian pyramids not just hanging out drinking juice in the north African sun instead?

Yes, dredging up from my O-level geography - zones of ease, temperate zones (forget the term) and zones of hardship... with the middle one stimulating more... something or other.
But it was a long time ago and may be a bit un-PC these days.

It works within Britain mind you ;)
