I wonder how much detail they'll see?

Well one thing springs to mind... If "They" are at a pre-radio stage, but able to light their cities, we might detect them.

I'd rather first contact was with little green Victorians than with anyone more advanced.

If they were more advanced they'd already have been looking at us and saying, "I'm glad first contact will be with little pink men who've only reached the 21st century stage." ;o)
