> ...the modern Welsh (I think) for 'Stonehenge' is 'Cor y Cewri' (Giant's Choir'?).

I have two theories on this, both rather half baked and formulated in the past 2 minutes:

1) Cor y Cewri is a mistranslation from 'Chorea Gigantum' (seems a bit far fetched though)
2) 'Cor y Cewri' could mean 'Giant's Cobweb'

Mmmm. Neither of the above are very convincing.

"choir" and "chorus" originally meant the same thing - a chorus line from the Greek band of singers and dancers - "choros" and the IE "ghoros" - an enclosed space. Not that I'm putting that forward as a serious derivation. The spelling of choir in English only settled down in the 1850s and it is still pronounced as "quire" and not choyre. How is the Welsh "Cor y Cewri" pronounced? It is the sound not the spelling that signifies and often misheard or misunderstood names were incorrectly written down and adopted.

Kammer, You say neither of the above are very convincing, well one of them is to me.
<Giants cobweb>, if you consider the number of references to long barrows as <Giants graves>.
I feel this post demonstrates the depth of knowledge contained in all who post on here, and although one persons ideas may not mean too much to them or others, it answers exactly anothers thoughts.
Many of you disagree with myself, but, you know that at Avebury there are two serpant trails leading off the embankments around the circles.
If you could please visualise a circle, in its simplest form, and at the centre of that circle a centre spot, through that spot radiate many lines all around the 360 degree of the circle, from the centre spot are ripples similer to a stone thrown in a pond,
If you can visualise this, and then see stones placed where the lines bisect the circles radius, and dependant on how many lines, and how big the stones are, you will be able to visualise a spiders web system, within the circle.
The number of lines, and the size of the stones will determine which of the ripples out from the centre spot the stones are placed on, and so give variable sizes of circles, the ripples are at 13 inch multiples out from the centre spot.
If you want to KNOW what the two serpent trails are for, I will continue, if you dont then I wish you all well in your little stone world.
