Hardwired

Any thoughts as to why British rock art is apparently abstract and possibly "hard wired" a la Lewis-Williams? Contrast it with Scandinavian rock art of a similar or slightly later period. That is mainly representational showing figures, boats, animals and carts. The Scandinavian rock art being very similar to that found in Africa and elsewhere. Everywhere else, we get figures and abstract, but not here.

Why is no British rock art representational? Odd isn't it? Makes me wonder if it is not art (in the decorative or pictorial sense) at all. Diagramatic or were the depressions and pathways between them made to hold liquids for divination? Or back to my ritual finger tracing?

Peter, cup & ring rock art isn't just confined to the British Isles, apparently it can be found in the Balearics, Portugal (believed to the original area I think), Spain, France, Switzerland, SW Scandinavia, Switzerland , Italy, Malta & the Canary Isles.

I think most would agree with you about rock-art being something other than just art, although art shouldn't be totally discounted.

Is it time to get me Morris's out again:

Cresswell has recognisable animal images - bit earlier than most of our rock art though.

The "but is it art" debate is one that has been around since the first use of the term and still isn't resolved , those who use it don't neccessarily
believe it is art . There are some certain , if rare cases of figurative RA usually feet and axes . There are also some carvings of deer but they have never been accepted as contemporary with the usual RA.

PeterH,keeping it simple, not discussing what I do.
I consider that you are on to something.
I am truly blessed when I do what I am not going to talk about.
When I follow circles and spirals.

I am now going to start chipping at some rocks, circles, spirals I will chip into them, and see if the patterns have an effect, if I follow them
