I think the fact they're not malarial is the only plus point. midges don't suck blood like mozzies, they actually bite a chunk out of your skin. which is nice

Word has it that mosquitoes can't actually fly very high (20 or 30 foot being about their maximum) though I can't actually vouch for this, nor whether the same criteria applies to midges (and of course if the critters are trapped in an aeroplane the sky's the limit :-(
