I was reading about the origins of the name 'Avebury', the medieval names etc....when it struck me that the 'Ave' bit could be from the word avenue or associated with it....just a mad thought I had and I thought I'd share it with you!
No. We dealt with this one some time back. Avebury means "Afa's burg" ie Afa's fortification. It was recorded as "Avreberie" in the Domesday Book of 1086. Nothing to do with the word "avenue" which is a French word meaning "an approach"
