In the year1723, by Thomas Earl of Pembrokes order, I began on a barrow north of stone henge, in the group south of the cursus.
We made a large cut in the top from east to west, and after the turf was removed, we came to a layer of chalk, then to fine garden mould, three feet down was a layer of flints about a foot deep, then another foot of garden mould .
This is from a book by Godfrey Higgins, Esq. 1839,
They would appear to have dug into dozens of barrows
