Layers

>>I've certainly not heard of exactly that form in Ireland. Sounds most odd.

A couple of things though. The Hound of Hostages was a cairn covered with a clay layer. Newgrange was built in several phases. Phase one was a low mound. The next couple of phases raised the mound around the passage. There was enough of a pause between phases to allow grass to cover the mound.<<

Love that typo, I wish there was an Irish Wolfhound sitting outside it, it could certainly do with a Guardian ;-)

Seriously though, Knowth is layered, the bit they let you in shows it clearly, although at the time I didn't think to ask if all the material was local or brought from elsewhere. If you're up that way anytime, please can you make a note of exactly what it is layered with and let me know?

Also, years ago, I read an excavation report on 'Primtomb' and some of the tombs at Carrowmore, in which it said for at least two tombs and I think it was Primtomb 1 and 2 but my memory is like a sieve and I can't find the report now :-( the ground had been deliberately flattened then there was a layer of yellow clay not local to the area placed with care then the construction of the covering took place. Maybe I've mis-remembered, it's highly possible.

I think it may have something to do with bringing clay from another revered area, but there's such scant info so far, it may not be of any relevance at all...

>>As to your actual question, I've never heard of any collection of that information.<<
Fingers crossed there might be some somewhere.

If I remember rightly Knowth is layers of river-rolled stones and turf. I'll check the excavation reports as soon as I can.

Just remembered: Listoghil at Carrowmore is built on a much older clay platform. http://www.megalithomania.com/show/site/996

This platform was used as a base for big fires, possibly pyres for a long time before the cairn was erected over it. The clay was brought in from somewhere else.

>>can you make a note of exactly what it is layered with and let me know?

Newgrange is layered with sods of turf, 'turves', stripped from the ground near the mound, also possibly brought some distance and laid down over loose clay and gravel, probably to keep the mound from slipping. There was also a few layers of larger stones between the layers of turves. I have a photo of the layers visible in the cross section of the Knowth mound and I'm pretty sure it was constructed the same way. I'll dig through my photo library and see if I can post a few of the Knowth cross sections.
