Hob, it's definitely one helluva chuffing scary document. I've managed to get completion down to 20mins, but that was for a rock with 1 cup & not a lot other stuff in the vicinity. Generally, it's taking me about 30-45mins per rock.

Agree with you about the analysis, theres certainly a danger of wayward interpretation sneaking into it. I doubt very much there'll be consistency across the teams recording, even though we've gone through the same training. One group thought they'd found an additional 40 marked rocks to Beckensall & to be honest some were laughable.

I hope after the analysis, they just don't come out with a theory, "RA is located near settlements, cairns / burial grounds & water courses", because it won't add anything new.

>"RA is located near settlements, cairns / burial grounds & water courses"

Heh! Better than "After extensive analysis using multiple regression analysis and a liberal sprinkling of chicken entrails, the study concludes that the prehistoric carvings studied are exclusively and extensively found on the surface of rocks." Statistics do my head in at the best of times :)

I would be interested to see how the sites relate to flint scatters, particularly microlithic scatters. It would be interesting to see if there's any statistical evidence that sheds light on the idea of mesolithic cups.
