I'm pretty sure he's right aand that there have been many totally absurd ideas about the meanings of CnRs etc. In fact I know there have, I usually generate a new preposterous chain of thought with each new site. They usually last a half an hour or so before something occurs to me which blows the idea out of the water, usually something to do with another RA site elsewhere which contradicts the original daft thought. That's part of the fun though.

Having said that, (and having taken a slightly snidey, rather unfounded pop at academic study of RA elsewhere on this thread) There are Archaeologists out there who are starting to try and make suggestions about what was going on. The Hunterheugh crags excavation is a good example, and one that appeals to me as it broadly agrees with some personal opinions about (one of the reasons)why RA is found in particular places in the landscape.
