The Bog Bodies

the two little words ... 'human sacrifice' ... will undoubtedly be trotted out :-(

Gruesome deaths - Anne Ross's The life and Death of a Druid Prince - a threefold death no less..

Indeed. It's always murder or human sacrifices.

Perhaps they were masochists. . .

Anyway, human sacrifice is always served up from the point of sensationlist barbarism (which, in all honesty, it probably is), but it would be interesting to look at it from a more loving point of view such as taking communion. If people honestly believed that it would enhance their lives, and I suspect their attitude towards life was rather different to ours, then it might well have been a far more refined and meaningful ceremony than we can visualise. Perhaps having one's nipples sliced off was some form of removing ill omens or bad luck from the group - think of the old fashioned 'sin-eaters', who took on the sins of the dead in order the deceased could enter into heaven. Perhaps this fulfilled a similar purpose.

Then again, they could all be criminals that have been knocked off, but an inherent fear of the gods means you have to treat their bodies with reverence anyway . . . ?

Soemthing to consider.
