Not so half baked Mr H. especially as a number of middens may be regarded as a distinct class of monument themselves.
As regards ancestoral feasts, I guess there may have been an unbroken continuity, a rich food source to Mesolithic peoples would also have been a rich food source during the later times.

I'd forgotten about those. Saw an reconstruction of one in a glass case once. A most odd thing to try and recreate in a museum.

Now a gigantic hazelnut midden, 20 feet tall, that would be a thing. I shall go and get my coat now...
