Ken, if you do get a Garmin, make sure its 1 that still gives you directions when stood still, as some of em don't. I've got an Etrex Summit which has served me well for nearly 2 years. Due to my map reading skills, I wouldn't have seen 90% of the sites I have, without it!!!

For rock art you do really need 8 or 10 digit grid references. with standing stones or other monuments you don't really need to be that close to see them, rock art is the hard one to find if you only have 6 digit numbers.

What you need to look for is whether it has a magnetic compass built in. The little yellow eTrex doesn't and so needs you to be moving so that it knows which direction you are facing in. If you are not moving and you turn around it will point in the wrong direction!!!!
