That might tie in with Layamon's poem <b>Brut</b> from AD1200 describing Stonehenge -

The stones are great
And magic power they have
Men that are sick
Fare to that stone
And they wash that stone
And with that water bathe away their sickness

that reminds me of the folklore tale of St Columba.
Columba sent a white stone to king Brude at Inverness to cure his druid Broichan. Broichan drank the water that was poured over the stone and was healed.

Oh bugger I've mentioned the druids!
