Hi Simon,

What makes you think it isn't prehistoric? it looks like a contender to me

Cheers
Andy

The correct term for that flaking is 'spalling' and it's generally attributed to freeze-thaw conditions. It can also be found in old or low grade brickwork and reinforced concrete. It's perhaps where the term 'flaky' originated.

I know my name isn't Simon, but why? Why do they look prehistoric? They look suspiciously like stone gate posts to me, which we all know litter Orkney like... well, like stone gate posts.

Yeah, well Jane summed it up really. They don't look very weathered. They look just about the right shape and size for fence posts. There are loads of stone fence posts on Orkney, so I was enquiring after something a bit more solid (metaphorically speaking).

Basically we should start any enquiry by say, "why do we think this is prehistoric?". Otherwise things would be barmy. We can't assume stuff is prehistoric just because it might be.
